LBO Web TODO list

Below was seeded by (in some cases abridged) segments of email conversations about the relevant pages and from Walter's findings. Continued discussion of each topic is encouraged via edits to this wiki.

    • (WFB 20161208) This page has links to the HSA and EVN, but not the GMVA, and includes only the Fermi space telescope. It omits all the new specific information about (for example) the new Irbene EVN station and the GMVA/ALMA proposal opportunity. This is not surprising since it was last updated (by Amy) on 2016/9/29 (perhaps just to change the letters "NRAO" to "LBO"). It seems to me we could just eliminate this page, and the link to it. All the information on it is present, and more up-to-date, on the (new) CfP, to which the immediately preceding link points. (One possible exception to the preceding statement is a link to the EVN Calculator. I think we have that somewhere, but not sure where.)
    • (JDR 20161208) I agree this page is unnecessary given the current format of the CfP and its integration with the web page. Need to seek any links into this and point to the latest CfP, leading into your last issue below...
    • (WFB 20170117) No change in this page to date. I'm reconsidering the thought that the page is useless... Should we retain generic instructions for proposing so that TOOs can know where to go? Have external references to this page been dropped yet?
    • (WFB 20161208) starts by referring to "NRAO telescopes", has info on the VLA, the GBT which shouldn't be there any more, and nothing on the VLBA. Should be rewritten entirely if needed at all, but better, could just point to https://science.lbo.us/facilities/vlba/docs/manuals/oss/obs-prep-ex
    • (JDR 20161208) Given the content here, I'm not sure we need this page at all. Your thought to change where it points to the above link is good.
    • (WFB 20170117) Not sure what the status of the links to this page are. When external links to this page are extinguished, please comment in a bullet below and consider unpublishing the page on Plone.
    • (WFB 20161208) ... This page doesn't belong in lbo.us at all...
    • (JDR 20161208) I think this doesn't belong in LBO web space. If anything links to this it should be redirected.
    • (WFB 20170117) Not sure what the status of the links to this page are. When external links to this page are extinguished, please comment in a bullet below and consider unpublishing the page on Plone.
    • (WFB 20161208) Page states, ironically, that "NRAO aims to operate the GBT, EVLA, VLBA, and ALMA as a unified system of telescopes", with lots of reasons why that used to be a good idea. We certainly don't want this page at all as it stands, and I can't really see much reason to re-write it.
    • (JDR 20161208) No longer relevant, as you say. Axe it.
    • (WFB 20170117) Not sure what the status of the links to this page are. When external links to this page are extinguished, please comment in a bullet below and consider unpublishing the page on Plone.
    • (WFB 20161209) You would have just seen emails between Jessica and me regarding scientific staff. The following page was copied over and should be disabled: ... Not sure if anything links to that. I'm not ready to propose staff listing on public pages. Could be considered in the future though.
    • (WFB 20170117) Not sure what the status of the links to this page are. When external links to this page are extinguished, please comment in a bullet below and consider unpublishing the page on Plone.
    • (JDR 201612xx) ... the Taylor-Lonsdale report: http://www.vlba.nrao.edu/astro/VLBI_Future/future.pdf This report was commissioned by NRAO (and Haystack), so it could be considered to belong in nrao.edu. But the conclusions of the report were motivated in part by the Sensitivity Upgrade plans, which are now in use by LBO.
    • (WFB 20161222) I suggest making a new page under the VLBA in science.lbo.us for special documents that should be available to the public. I've generated a prototype for this on the www.lbo.us page (https://www.lbo.us/documents/). It (both the documents page and the actual documents) would better belong in plone though for long term curation. Once that is in place I'll remove my temporary page. I don't plan to link anything to the temporary page at this point.
    • (JDR 201612xx) ...This compilation appears to have become dormant...
    • (WFB 20161222) ... Goal: get this functionality migrated by end of January.
    • (JO 20170117) It looks like it's just a matter of getting some permissions changed and then updating the directory paths in a couple of script files.
    • (WFB 20161222) ... It is resolved. Links to the above page should be replaced with: https://www.lbo.us/vlba/astro/calib/ ...
    • (WFB 20170117) Any links to the original NRAO page should be found and replaced. A redirect from the original page to the new one should be added (AI for WFB)
    • (WFB 20161222) Copied to https://www.lbo.us/software/sched/ . A deeper issue will be links from the sched documentation to the NRAO sites we're trying to retire. Since the web docs are, I believe, generated by running latex2html (or something similar) these fixes best be done at the source. Might want to learn from Craig the best way if it is not obvious. I'd say no need to update for the current release of sched, but maybe these links should be updated for the next version (AI for Amy?).
    • (WFB 20170117) To do: 1. rid links to the original page, 2. remove content from the old location (and maybe set up redirect?) 3. new sched releases to populate the new location
  • The LBO "favicon.ico" has been reverted to the NRAO one. (AI for WFB in conjunction w/ NRAO Web Group)
    • (WFB 20170117) General navigation via the "tabs" at the top of the LBO pages is quite clunky. For now, rather than go into details, just noting that it is easy to find unexpected linkages.
    • (JO 20121206) According to helpdesk it has changed in the last couple years. They have their own documentation web page that covers the cameras and the cron job that pulls the images down so we can probably just update the README to point to that file.
    • (WFB 20170117) Migrate to LBO.us. (AI for WFB w/ help from Web Group)
    • (JO 20170120) Mirroring of image data has been set up.
    • (WFB 20170121) New page is complete: https://www.lbo.us/vlba/sites/SITECAM/allsites.shtml . Links to the old page should be changed to point to the new page. When complete, the mirroring of images to the original location, /home/www.vlba.nrao.edu/content/sites/SITECAM should be disabled.
  • Student support
  • https://science.lbo.us/facilities/vlba/observing/calibration
  • https://www.lbo.us/vlba/astro/calib/
    • (WFB 20170117) Not a pure web issue, but the list of calibrators included in the search tool should be updated
  • http://www.vlba.nrao.edu/astro/prop/rapid/ migrated to https://www.lbo.us/vlba/astro/prop/rapid/
    • (WFB 20170122) Found when searching google for VLBA TOO proposals. Last update was 2013; prior to that multiple entries per year. What is status of this?
    • (WFB 20180223) https://science.lbo.us/observing/proposal-types/approvedddtproposals seems to be the intended new page, taking over in time roughly 2013. Currently this is almost exclusively VLA. Eventually these two pages should be merged and the old one be retired.
  • http://www.vlba.nrao.edu/astro/messages/
  • Other pages that seem out of date. All are under http://www.vlba.nrao.edu/astro/ which already redirects (now to https://science.lbo.us/facilities/vlba) because it is obsolete. Many can be outright deleted. Others might need modernized content migrated to Plone.
    • needs LBO favicon.ico
    • needs LBO-specific "page not found" page
  • https://science.lbo.us/facilities/vlba/contact
    • Needs major update to content
    • NRAO equivalent page to be retired
