Minor Enhancements

NRAO Interactive Services Modification Request 2C209, June 2009

1. Introduction

Several minor enhancements based on feedback from the last cycle.

2. Background

3. Requirements

  • Changes to the Student Stipend via Dale: There are really 4 parts to this application. Requesting Investigator, Miscellaneous Expenses, Student Stipends, and text that describes the Assignment (i.e. work) that the student will do. The first three are fine except that it would also be nice to have:
    1. a Total = Miscellaneous Expenses + Student Stipends.
    2. As you can see, the Assignment (which applies to the whole project) gets stuck in an awkward comment field. A simple ascii box under the Student info would be fine. (See https://safe.nrao.edu/wiki/pub/Software/PSTNotesJun2009/Dale_Frail_-_01-14-09_-_465YFY3.pdf)

  • Make it easier to locate and print Student Support documents. Right now it is difficult to locate authors asking for student support in the proposal list and the cover sheet is printed out with the student support documents. CarlBignell suggested the ability to export or print three separate files: (1) coversheet/scientific justification; (2) student support; and (3) plan of dissertation. CarlBignell and LoriAppel should agree on these details. (LoriAppel is okay with this functionality.)

  • Change GBT resource default of 4 spectral windows to 1 spectral window since the default is to list only one frequency.

  • Check available resources when copying resources from a previous proposal. Right now we check at validation only. (Possible solution: pop up an Alert box that tells the user he or she is copying resources from a previous trimester, and those resources may not be available this trimester - check the call for proposals)

  • If a proposal is both a "large" proposal and a "joint" proposal, the constraint that the proposal must be > 200 hours should be removed.

  • Make sure that the type of proposal (e.g., Rapid Response) is in the subject and body of emails that are posted.

  • When adding a new author, make the search for existing authors more forgiving, ie. "Tom Bania" should search first for "Bania" and then for "Tom", "Tom" OR "Bania", or something like this. Because the search looks for the whole string, people are not finding other authors who are legitimately in the database. We also noticed that when searching for authors gets stuck in an infinite loop at the "busy signal" with the four blue dots flashing, you can get out of the loop by clicking on "Authors" on the left hand side, upon which the PST displays the authors that it found. (At the very least, there should be text below the blue dots to either force or suggest the user to click out of the loop.)

4. Design

Technical lead should provide a brief description of how this will be implemented in the code.

5. Deployment Checklist

Documentation? Systems/hardware/networking things needed for deployment?

6. Test Plan

6.1 Internal Testing

6.2 Sponsor Testing

6.3 Integration/Regression Tests
