Development and Debugging of Importasdm

CASA Modification Request 9C108, November 2007

1. Introduction

Importasdm is needed to read archive EVLA and ALMA data into casapy.

2. Background

3. Requirements

The only planned method for reading (u-v) data and meta data from the EVLA and ALMA archives into casapy is via the task importasdm. This filler program will be needed when the EVLA Widar correlator begins operation in mid 2008 and is needed soon for ATF data. It is being held-up by the lack of the complete definition of the ASDM as well as the archive file formats.

4. Design

The design of importasdm must be closely aligned with the developments and form of the ASDM. This requires close coordination with Francois Villiafond and others.

5. Deployment Checklist

6. Test Plan

6.1 Internal Testing

6.2 Sponsor Testing

The testing will be arduous and important in order to make sure that importasdm transfers the archive data properly into casa. The proper use of the meta-data is also a consideration. It is expected that close coordination will be needed by the sponsor, the main developer and the EVLA/ALMA archive group. Consideration of importasdm efficiency and disk usage will be important.

6.3 Integration/Regression Tests

A regression test specifically designed for importasdm to test for many aspects of the archive data in the EVLA and ALMA is needed. This should naturally come out of the sponsor testing.

6.4 Testing for Scientific Validity

Scientific validity will be determined by using the casa measurement set, obtained from importasdm, to pass all of the other regression tests associated with casa. Another important test is that exportuvfits can properly export the casa data into other packages, such as AIPS.
