Full Implementation of Wide-Field Imaging

CASA Modification Request 22C108, November 2007

1. Introduction

Wide-field imaging will be the most important imaging task for the EVLA. It was present in the aips++ tool kit (wproj), but transferral to a task needs more work.

2. Background

3. Requirements

Casa must have a robust and efficient wide-field imaging task since most EVLA imaging at frequencies <8 GHz in the A and B configuration must use this algorithm.

4. Design

The basic code for wide-field imaging is in place; however, its use, especially with outlier fields (bright sources outside of the main field of view) is too cumbersome. Some of the controls in wide-field imaging are obscure and need more testing and documentation.

'widefield' task is already there...please test it out and file jira tickets to fix issues.

5. Deployment Checklist

6. Test Plan

6.1 Internal Testing

6.2 Sponsor Testing

Comparison with AIPS for large field of view observations is probably the best way to test the system. The use of simulated data is recommended.

6.3 Integration/Regression Tests

6.4 Testing for Scientific Validity
