The only way to avoid SSL certificate errors from "self signed" certificates (like those typically used at NRAO) is to permanently accept them. To do this:

  • click on Show Certificate when you get the Unable to verify SSL server ??.cv.nrao.edu dialoge
  • press the option key on your keyboard, and drag the certificate icon to your desktop
  • double click on the desktop icon for the certificate
  • when the Add Certificates dialog come up select the X509Anchors keychain
  • click OK

Now, this certificate is permanently added to your list of accepted certificates and you shouldn't be prompted again.
