For OSX 10.4 (Tiger), you can just log in as an administrative user and run:

    bash$ passwd root

For OSX 10.3 (Panther) , you need to run:

    bash$ sudo passwd root

However, unless you really do a lot of work as root, e.g. building packages etc., you are probably better off just using sudo when you really need to do something as root from the commandl line.
