VertexRSI Antenna 1 Solar Loading Tests

TIP Last Update: JeffMangum - 14 September 2008

Test Overview

On 2008/08/06-14 Lewis and Pere performed tests to investigate how heating the antenna affects all-sky pointing. The tests involved the following:

  • Track Sun with:
    1. Antenna surface facing Sun for several hours before sunset. Do all-sky OPT runs after sunset for several hours.
      • Test done 2008/09/06.
        • Did daytime pointing, then tracked 1 degree from the Sun for 3 hours (until Sunset).
        • Tracked Sun from 19:18 to 22:18 UT (Sunset).
        • Followed with three night-time pointing runs.
        • Seeing measurements made with night-time pointing runs.
        • See 2008-09-06/allsky01, allsky02, seeing01, seeing02, 2008-09-07/allsky01, and seeing01 for details.
        • NOTE: acuReport was run only during seeing measurements. Need the temperature sensor information to diagnose structural deformations due to temperature. Will re-do this test.
      • Test repeated 2008/09/08.
        • Tracked Sun from 19:00 to 22:15 UT (Sunset).
        • Followed with three night-time pointing runs.
        • Seeing measurements made with night-time pointing runs.
        • See 2008-09-08/illumination01, seeing01 and seeing02 for details.
    2. Antenna back to Sun for several hours before sunset. Do all-sky OPT runs after sunset for several hours.
      • Test done 2008/09/07.
        • Tracked with antenna back-on to the Sun from 19:00-22:22 UT (nearly 3.5 hours) before Sunset.
        • Followed with three all-sky optical pointing runs.
        • Seeing measurements made with night-time pointing runs.
        • See 2008-09-07/allsky02 through allsky04 and seeing01 through seeing04 for details.
        • NOTE: acuReport was run only during seeing measurements. Need the temperature sensor information to diagnose structural deformations due to temperature. Will re-do this test.
      • Test repeated 2008/09/09.
        • Tracked back-on to Sun from 18:35 to 22:22 (about 3 hours) before Sunset.
        • Followed with three all-sky optical pointing runs.
        • No seeing measurements made.
        • See 2008-09-09/illumination01 for details.
    3. Left side of antenna surface facing Sun for several hours before sunset. Do all-sky OPT runs after sunset for several hours.
      • Test done 2008/09/11.
        • Tracked 90 degrees from the Sun illuminating left side of antenna for 3 hours (until Sunset).
        • Followed with three night-time pointing runs (two were good).
        • No seeing measurements made.
        • See 2008-09-09/illumination01 for details.
        • NOTE: AIV weather station pressure indicator was foobar during these observations, corrupting the refraction correction. As can be seen below one can reconstruct measurements by adding a TX term to fit, but this adds considerable uncertainty. Will re-do this test.
      • Test repeated 2008/09/12-13.
        • Tracked 90 degrees from Sun illuminating left side of antenna for 4 hours before Sunset.
        • Followed with three all-sky optical pointing runs.
        • No seeing measurements made.
        • See 2008-09-12/illumination and 2008-09-13/illumination01 for details.
    4. Right side of antenna surface facing Sun for several hours before sunset. Do all-sky OPT runs after sunset for several hours.
      • Test done 2008/09/13-14.
        • Tracked 90 degrees from the Sun illuminating right side of antenna for 4 hours (until Sunset).
        • Followed with three night-time pointing runs.
        • No seeing measurements made.
        • See 2008-09-13/illumination2 and 2008-09-14/illumination1 for details.

Test Summary

Point of the solar loading tests is to see how temperature gradient affects pointing performance. Summary points are:

  • Clear temperature-gradient induced azimuth axis tilt measured.
  • Tiltmeter metrology can correct for azimuth axis tilt if it functions properly.
  • Many pointing runs yielded reasonably good RMS even with need for tilt correction.
