Background

This page establishes a set of benchmarks that can be used at all of the ARCs to test the performance of the various computing components: cluster nodes, Lustre, CASA, etc. The focus is HPC, but these can certainly be run on Linux workstations (standard disclaimers apply).

Various people have conducted various tests over the years to varying degrees of (dis)satisfaction.

This is not a Lustre benchmark, nor an HPC benchmark, nor CASA. We're looking for benchmarks that are as holistic as reasonably possible to encompass the various ALMA workloads.

The goal is to eliminate "I think this job runs slower on XYZ vs ABC..."

We want to have a set of tests people can run and say "I ran benchmark xyz in 7 days, 7 hours, 7 minutes" and produce meaningful metrics to precisely and accurately evaluate performance.

We're looking for benchmarks that can be run in a few hours up to a week+, to try and satisfy the majority of the use cases for the ALMA users. The ALMA pipeline is a natural tool to use as a benchmark, but it is important to agree on a set of data that can be consistently tested against.

How to launch the Jobs in batch: ALMA Production Batch Processing

 
1. Create a file called "pipelinerun" -- this can be created in the top qa2/username/ directory
2. Put the pipeline reprocessing command. For example: 
     cd /lustre/naasc/sciops/comm/rindebet/pipeline/scripts && ./calibPipeIF-NA.py --mous=uid://A001/X1296/X1d1

3.  ssh cvpost-master 
4.  In a bash terminal, cd into the /qa2/username/ directory (where your pipelinerun file is)
5.  run the following:
     Without Imaging:
          sh /lustre/naasc/users/jrobnett/alma-pipeline/bin/batch_pipe.sh -m 25 pipelinerun 
          This will submit a job to batch queue with 25GBs (part of a node).

     With Imaging:
          sh /lustre/naasc/users/jrobnett/alma-pipeline/bin/batch_pipe.sh -m 245 pipelinerun
          This will submit a job to batch queue with 245GBs (whole node). 
For the example pipelinerun text file above, it should be "-m 245". This will launch 5 jobs in 5 nodes. 


Filesystem Testing

Lower level tests of basic filesystem operations against standardized small- and large-size data structures:
  • mv,cp,find/lfs find
  • tar {c|x} operations
  • du
  • rsync (intra- and inter-filesystem)
  • asdmExportLight

Specifics TBD

To Do

  1. Ask Remy for TP version of calPipeIF-NA.py
  2. Clean up column headers
    1. GB is implied for RAM, etc.
    2. Trim down extraneous crud so you don't need a 60" monitor to load the page to read it.
    3. Add "Comments" column?
  3. Removed references to 855 and 859 as they were dropped as redundant.
  4. Actually, strip out any results NOT on the "17 List"
  5. Evaluate pull down menu options where needed and remove where a cut and paste is simply faster. Pull down menus are a major PITA to maintain over time...
  6. Add a column to initial timings for ZFS timings to be available for a quick thumbnail review.
  7. Add a % delta column.
  8. Add 2 new timing colums - 2.10.5 and tweaks.
  9. 2 more Total Power (TP) sets from Remy.

CASA Testing

This wiki acts as the repository for the list of benchmarks as well as the recording of results. The following table represents a proposed list of data to use as a "minimum set" of benchmark projects. These data were selected from the Cycle 6 Pipeline validation list, itself a subset of the larger ALMA pipeline benchmarking sample compiled during pipeline commissioning effort in North America and subsequently provided to the JAO Data Management Group.

Caveat - these tables are populated by humanoids using cut and paste. The possibility of a transcription error is > 0%.
