Hi, everyone,

Here's a revised writeup of the descope effect on 1.7 and 1.8 of the DRSP.

Chris Hi, Jean and Al,

Here are my comments on DRSP 1.7 and 1.8 and the impact of descoping. Instead of copying over each DRSP and adding comments at the end, I've just included the number and title and added in brackets the number of hours needed with baseline ALMA.

In considering the effect of delaying the Y+ pads, I've adopted a resolution without the Y+ which is 0.033" (345 GHz/freq). I got this from one of Al's Early Science memos, I hope it is right.

The bottom line is two programs are not possible until Y+ is built, although one of them might be able to decrease their resolution by 25% and work with the 5 km array. In addition, there are four programs requiring moderate or high dynamic range (400, 500, 1000, >3000:1)

Chris

(1) Programs where Y+ descope has no impact; integration time required scales with number antennas and IFs squared: Angular resolution does not require Y+ array. Some programs requiring high dynamic range are noted.

1.7.1 The GMC Scale Chemical Anatomy of Nearby Galaxies (144 hrs)

1.7.2 The Molecular ISM in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies (96 hrs)

1.7.3 Calibrating the I_CO to N(H_2) Conversion Factor (140 hrs)

1.7.4 Structure of the ISM in irregular galaxies (180 hrs)

1.7.5 Low Frequency Survey of Free-Free Emission in starbursts (43 hrs) (Dynamic range required estimated to be 400:1)

1.7.6 Study of Gas Masses and Star Formation Efficiencies (120 hrs) (Dynamic range required estimated to be 500:1)

1.7.7 Gas Content and Dynamics of Elliptical Galaxies (100 hrs)

1.7.8 Gas densities and dynamics in central regions (99 hrs)

1.7.9 CO(6-5) emission from a small sample of ULIRGs (75 hrs)

1.7.11 The CO-to-H2 conversion factor (169 hrs)

1.8.1 Structure and starformation of LMC/SMC molecular clouds (170 hrs)

1.8.3 Background quasars and the chemistry of the MC ISM (360 hrs)
(Note
program seems to be doing a single line at a time)

1.8.5 Gas and Dust in 30 Doradus (80 hrs) (Dynamic range required estimated to be 1000:1)

1.8.2 Evolved stars and mass loss in the Magellanic Clouds (320 hrs)

(2) Programs that are not possible with Y+ descope: Observing in continuum Some programs requiring high dynamic range are noted.

1.7.10 Searching for Proto- Super Star Clusters in the Antennae (20 hrs)

1.8.4 Low Frequency Continuum Survey of Free-Free Emission in the LMC (56 hrs) (Program requires very high dynamic range, up to 3000:1)
(Note
0.08" requires Y+ at 115 GHz; if resolution could be dropped to 0.1" could be done with 5 km array and would move to category 2)
