News

  • Cost Review - the written report should be available by the end of November. No significant science IPT items.
  • Characterization -- Meeting tomorrow in Santiago with Nyman -- Wootten. Nyman will meet with me in Santiago 26 Oct about this. First priority is to get the data before it is overwritten. CBI may be able to help with this task.
  • NAASC news -- Hibbard--AW reported on the ANASAC telecon, zmachine conference and on the AAS meeting plans. SM noted that we need to concentrate on positive news.

Topics

  • Homework from today's IPT meeting:
    1. Two-antenna document. Working doc distributed; IPT leads/deputies to jointly fill out, return by Nov 5th. (ESO has done some Exec-based analysis).
    2. I expect us to be tasked with quantifying the improvements which would occur if the two ALMA antennas had identical, or nearly so, quadrupod designs. We need to discuss how we might do that.
  • April 2003 ASAC Report on the Science Cost of Heterogeneous Antenna Designs
  • SG Presentation to April 2003 ASAC Meeting
  • AW Document
  • ANATAC Report
  • For item no. one, we can create a new version incorporating the material in these documents and any additional material which we can develop. AW will produce a first draft for next week's meeting; please comment.
  • For the second, we could use actual beam maps for the two antennas from holography measurements. AW will work on obtaining those measurements (Tony has approved) and MH and DTE will work on developing a simulation. We need to come up with some quantitative measure of the effect on the science. The most important science is, of course, the Level one science spelled out in Annex B of the bilateral agreement. Of these, the imaging of the dust and magnetic fields in a protoplanetary disk seems most challenging to an array populated with antennas of multiple quandrupod design. I suggest this be our main simulation target, done at a moderately high frequency such that mosaicking of outer dusty regions of the disk is important to the image.

  • Location of the ACA
    • Several possible locations for the ACA exist. "W' was approved but the new array design necessitates taking another look at this location. MH reports that the compact array exceeds the 50m which had been reserved for it, especially when the location of the 12m antennas is taken into account. While this is a favored location (less earth needs to be moved than for some other locations) it needs to be scrutinized. MH will do this, and AW will discuss with Morita and others at ACA review.
    • Holdaway reports that it is difficult to reconcile the position which is in a document from ED with our DEMs of the terrain. Perhaps he has used an autocad terrain. Autocads are all in a datum which is not on sam56. Perhaps 30m shift.
    • Some sheilding from AOS TB RFI would be good. The move of the AOS TB from an area where it would be hidden from the array to the present location where it is the line of sight was perhaps not good from this perspective. As we discussed though, we aren't sure where it actually is.
