NRAO Town Hall
There will be an NRAO Town Hall at the American Astronomical Society
Meeting in Washington, D. C. The session will be held Tuesday, January 5,
6:30 to 8:30 pm (room TBD).
The NRAO Town Hall will begin with a reception (including food & drink),
that will be followed by brief presentations and an audience Q&A session.
The status of ALMA will be addressed. In addition, there will be an ALMA
section in the NRAO booth every day where there will be ALMA, EVLA, GBT
and VLBA literature and personnel to answer questions. There will be ALMA
and North American ALMA Science Center related posters available for
viewing.
ALMA Poster Session at 215th AAS Meeting
January 5-9, 2010 in Washington DC
Posters:
These are in the "CeriseMaroon" linking group, under Category 38 (Instrumentation: Ground Based or Airborne)
1. Status of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array
Author Block: John E. Hibbard (NRAO), S. Corder (ALMA/NRAO), ALMA Project Team
Abstract: The construction of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) is advancing rapidly with complete systems of final hardware already in operation at both the Operations Support Facility (OSF) at 3000 m and the ALMA Operations Site (AOS) at 5000 m and with almost all the key elements of the control software in place. A great deal of testing at both the single-dish level and of basic interferometric functions has already taken place and the results so far are all extremely encouraging. The work of the Commissioning and Science Verification team is now moving on towards multi-element experiments like phase closure and initial imaging tests, while the Assembly Integration and Verification team will be focussing on bringing more fully integrated antennas on line as ALMA moves into its mass-production phase. We present an overview of the current status and testing. We include images of the current hardware and software tools and recent results from the testing process.
Control/Tracking Number: 215-RC-1594-AAS
2. ALMA Band 1 (31- 45 GHz) Receiver Development at HIA
Author Block: Gerald H. Moriarty Schieven1, S. Claude1, F. Jiang1, D. Dousset1, N. Wren1, I. Wevers1, M. Fletcher1, D. Henke1, K. Wu2 (1NRC-CNRC, Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, Canada, 2Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada)
Abstract: Each ALMA antenna is designed to carry ten receiver cartridges covering the entire frequency range 30-950GHz which is visible from the ground, but receivers to cover all ten frequency bands are not currently being built. Band 1, covering 30-45GHz, may be part of the future development plans for ALMA. The Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, which is currently building the Band 3 (84-116GHz) receiver cartridges, is carrying out R&D to develop a low-noise amplifier, orthomode transducer, and optics, which will meet the very strict requirements of Band 1 receivers for ALMA. We report on the current developments at HIA.
Control/Tracking Number: 215-RC-1822-AAS
3. Rob Reid: CASA and/or a simulated observation of Vega's debris
disk. This should address both CASA basics/advertisement and the sim.
4. Tony Remijan: Splatalogue
5. Carol Lonsdale:
NAASC
6. Al Wootten: science-themed ALMA poster plus development opportunities
7. Amanda Kepley simulations poster
Poster from EVLA people:
- Rick Perley -- session 38 (Instrumentation) EVLA overview talk
- Michael Rupen -- probably an EVLA instrumentation poster (session 38) but could also do a science talk on neutron stars or black holes (sessions 12, 13) Also giving a special session talk on local galaxies, will plug EVLA of course
- Steve Myers -- session 40 (Surveys) EVLA & Big Projects talk
- Mark Claussen -- session 14 (Evolved stars) use of EVLA to observe line emission from stellar winds [hoping to show IRC +10216]
- Emmanuel Momjian-- session 19 (Star formation) Ka band poster with a small section on EVLA
- Aeree Chung/Juergen Ott -- session 29 (Galaxy clusters) poster on Leo Ring, hoping for WIDAR-0 data
- Juergen Ott -- special session talk on ANGST, will mention EVLA
- Joan Wrobel -- session 27 (AGN)? will put in a good word on EVLA
- Urvashi Rau -- session 41 (Software) or 27 (AGN) dissertation talk
- Dale Frail -- special HEAD session talking on Fermi/VLA results.
- Claire Chandler -- undecided
